We are seeking an experienced professional to fill the role of Senior Accountant – Special Projects and Reporting. As an important member of Finance, the Senior Accountant will actively participate in the financial reporting of federal and local housing programs collaborating closely with other department leaders to provide consultative analysis and reporting. This position reports directly to the Financial Reporting Manager, Finance, based at our Central Office in Tukwila, WA.

Essential Functions

The Senior Accountant – Special Projects and Reporting will:

  • Execute complex and analytical special projects to inform management decision-making.
  • Prepare internal financial reports.
  • Participate in budget development and monitoring processes, including federal and local program revenue/expense analysis and forecasting. 
  • Perform budget-to-actual variance analysis, collaborating with others to identify and explain variances; prepare correcting entries for miscoded transactions as needed.
  • Attend meetings and demonstrate financial related outcomes and offer solutions.
  • Assist with the testing and implementation of upcoming financial software conversion.
  • Cross-train and act as a backup for other Senior Accountants as needed.

Qualifications and Competencies

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, business administration, economics, or related field. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred.  AND
  • Considerable experience in accounting, finance, budgeting, financial planning, coding journal entries, and/or analysis. Experience working in a public agency is preferred.  OR
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform this position's essential functions.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  

  • Understands the technical aspects of the position by staying up-to-date on both technical and procedural matters, including but not limited to:
  • Financial planning and control procedures, accounting and budgeting within public housing; and
  • Proficiency in understanding and applying state, federal, and administrative regulations, policies, and procedures governing public housing finance practices, including the ability to interpret and explain these regulations to stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates experience in maintaining accurate records and performing precise data entry with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates an ability to think critically and creatively, interpreting data, drawing conclusions, questioning and searching for answers, evaluating ideas and information, and developing actionable ideas.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills, including prioritization, accuracy assurance, multitasking, and appropriate handling of interruptions, ensuring timely and effective completion of assignments.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, by actively listening and sharing pertinent information.
  • Demonstrates exceptional customer service skills, prioritizing professional excellence and effectively managing stress.
  • Applies independent judgment, utilizing analysis, experience, and perspective to solve problems and communicate decisions or actions.

  • Proficiency in using MS Office programs, database software, and other analytical software programs, including but not limited to:
  • Intermediate to advance skills utilizing various MS Excel functions and tools, specific expertise utilizing Pivot Tables and/or other add-ins like Spreadsheet Server is preferred.
  • Proficiency in utilizing mid-tier general ledger accounting software is preferred.

  • The successful candidate will need to have access to reliable transportation to meet the business needs of the Agency.

Work Environment: 
After initial onboarding, this position will have the opportunity to work remotely in accordance with the KCHA's flexible work arrangements; however, remote work conditions will be reviewed on a regular basis based on business and program need. Employees must reside in Washington State and the ability to report to the Central Office in Tukwila will be required. Some local and domestic travel may be required to support KCHA business needs.

Incumbent(s) must be able to meet the physical requirements of the classification and have mobility, balance, coordination, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the functions performed.
