According to the Children’s Safety Network, 3,572 people die from drowning yearly in the U.S.-- 945 are children. Children account for one out of four drowning deaths. To raise awareness of this issue and provide families with resources Fort Wayne Housing Authority is partnering with Jorgensen Family YMCA to provide free water safety classes for children ages 6 -17. The program is designed to teach children practical water safety skills to avoid accidental drownings.
"Every summer, a child drowns because they were not taught proper water safety skills,” said FWHA CEO/Executive Director George Guy. “We want our families to feel safe during trips to the local pool, and have a peace of mind - knowing their children know how to swim. FWHA is honored to partner with the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne to ensure that children in our community know how to remain safe while having fun in the water."
The program is free and will continue through August 3rd. Families interested in attending or have any questions, please email kflanagan@fwha.org or call (260) 267- 9300 X 7233.
