The transformation of the former Yakima Armory into housing for homeless and low-income veterans is underway after the Yakima Housing Authority broke ground on the long-awaited project Wednesday.

Yakima Housing Authority Executive Director Lowel Krueger, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray and Yakima veteran Chuck Austin took shovels to the yard of the property at 1702 Tahoma Ave. and turned the soil.

More than a dozen families who have recently experienced homelessness now have a new place to call home.

Tuesday, the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority celebrated the grand opening of Minnehaha Townhomes. The 16 units are the first public housing the city has built since 2010.

City leaders say the two and three-bedroom options are located close to the light rail and Minnehaha Park and are available for families who were previously in homeless shelters.

A facility to permanently house chronically homeless persons and provide a variety of services to help get them off the streets is set to be completed in late summer, county officials said.

The Queens Motel on Stoddard Wells Road, more than 50 years old, dilapidated, unused and within sight of passing motorists on nearby Interstate 15, will be renovated into Desert Haven Apartments.

Boston’s public housing agency is making 1,000 rental housing vouchers available to homeless folks looking for long-term housing.

The Section 8 vouchers are the result of federal Housing Choice Program funding and will provide housing search assistance, stabilization services and funds for those moving into a home for the next six months, according to a press release from the city.
